I’m still struggling with finding a way to even out the weight contrast on single stroke letters such as C and O, to incorporate the different weights used in the other forms to keep a uniform feel. I’m also designing a few alternates for letters such as A and J. In the last critique it was noted that work needed to be done on the size of the B, weight of the single stroke letters, and I’ve made a few changes focusing on those areas. I’m slowly beginning to transfer this work into Fontographer in order to finish my font.
I’ve spent some time working on tweaking the edges of the letter forms to make them more finished rather than rigid and so harsh. I’ve also spent some time playing with the contrasts and angles of some of the letter forms such as “A”, “X”, and “K”. I’ve created a few alternate letter forms for certain letters to experiment with the different weight distributions. I feel like I can still push the “O” to have some sort of weight contrast incorporated and there are also a few small refinements I’m looking forward to making.
With the beginning stages of my font creation, I don’t necessarily have any specific fonts or examples for inspiration, I have just kind of started creating. I tend to favor fonts that are very even in weight and contrast, so for my own font creation I figured I would challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone, going for a very drastic weight contrast. I have kept rather thin horizontal stems, with a thicker vertical stems when necessary. I don’t particularly like serifs, so I am focusing on keeping my font a san serif. I also want the stress to be only on one of the vertical stems, so that it’s not too much weight.
This photo is obviously a first draft of starting my letters. I have a lot left to do. Specifically working with the rounded letters to make sure I can incorporate the same contrast in weight while maintaining the identity and legibility of the letter.
